War by Habanero — Card Game Review and Demo

18+ only.

War Review

War is a card-based table game from Habanero released in 2017. In each round, the player and the virtual dealer receive one card each, and the higher-ranked card wins. The main exception comes when the cards tie: you can surrender or choose the “go to war” option. Habanero lists an RTP of 97.3% for the standard bet and a maximum multiplier of x11.

War Demo — Play for Free

War is available in demo mode through both SlotsLaunch and Habanero’s official game page. The free version lets you learn the standard bet, the separate Tie bet and the options available after a tie without risking real money. It is especially useful to see the “go to war” sequence in advance because it requires an additional bet equal to the original stake.

War Key Features

War is not a reel-and-payline slot but a short card duel against a virtual dealer. The key factors are therefore the RTP of the different bets, the tie rule, the maximum multiplier and the steps involved when you choose to “go to war”.

About War

War uses the Casino War format. The player places a standard bet and receives one face-up card, while the dealer receives another. Suits do not matter, and rank determines the winner, with Ace as the highest card. If the player’s card is higher, the standard bet wins and pays 1:1; if the dealer’s card is higher, the bet loses.

A special sequence begins when both cards have the same rank. At that point, the player chooses between two options. Surrender ends the round with half of the original stake lost. Choosing “go to war” requires another bet equal to the standard bet, after which three cards are burned and the player and dealer receive new cards.

When the round continues to “war” in the Habanero version, the player’s new card must be at least as high as the dealer’s. In that case, the additional bet wins 1:1 and the original stake is returned without profit. If the dealer’s new card is higher, both stakes are lost. This decision after a tie is the game’s main strategic choice.

War Special Features

War does not use Free Spins, Wilds, Scatters or Bonus Buy because it is a card-based table game rather than a reel slot. Instead of bonus rounds, it has two special mechanics: the decision after a tie and a separate Tie bet.

  • Go to War. When the first cards tie, the player can add another bet equal to the original stake and continue the deal. After three cards are burned, a new card is dealt to both the player and the dealer.
  • Surrender. Instead of continuing, the player can end the round after the initial tie and lose half of the standard bet.
  • Tie Bet. This separate side bet wins if the player’s first card and the dealer’s first card have the same rank. A payout of 11:1 is confirmed for the Habanero version.

The two bets have very different mathematics. Habanero officially lists an RTP of 97.3% for the Standard Bet and 88.75% for the Tie Bet. The tie side bet therefore offers a higher single payout but a substantially lower theoretical return.

War Interface and Controls

The War interface is centred on a card table and its betting areas. Before the deal, the player chooses the size of the standard bet and can optionally add a Tie Bet. After the first cards are dealt, an extra decision is required only if the ranks match: choose Surrender or go to War and place a second bet.

Habanero’s official page confirms support for desktop, tablet and mobile devices in both portrait and landscape orientation. The same sequence applies on mobile: place a bet, deal one card to each side and make a choice if the cards tie.

War Pros and Cons

War is built around short rounds and very simple card comparison, but the choice after a tie can significantly change the risk of a single deal.

Pros

  • Simple rule: the higher-ranked card wins.
  • The standard bet has an officially stated RTP of 97.3%.
  • A demo mode is available for learning the rules for free.
  • The Go to War mechanic adds a distinct decision after a tie.
  • Desktop, tablet and mobile are supported in both portrait and landscape orientations.

Cons

  • Choosing Go to War requires an additional bet equal to the original stake.
  • The Tie Bet has an RTP of 88.75%, well below the standard bet.
  • The x11 maximum multiplier limits the size of a single win compared with many slots.

War Reviews

Below are opinions about War. They help you understand which features, mechanics, pace, and design may be important when evaluating the game.

I like that War barely requires any rule learning. You get one card, the dealer gets one card, and the result is clear immediately. The most interesting part only starts on a tie, when you have to choose between Surrender and Go to War. For short sessions, I find this format more convenient than complicated table games.

Editor’s reply:

That captures War’s main strength well: the basic round is extremely simple, and the only meaningful decision appears when the cards tie.

I like that the standard bet has a 97.3% RTP and the rules are not overloaded with extra combinations. Go to War does mean you have to remember that a tie requires another bet. The demo is useful because you can run through that sequence once and understand how the stakes move.

Editor’s reply:

Yes. The extra stake required when you go to War is the key point to understand before playing for real money. The demo lets you see it without financial risk.

The separate Tie bet looks tempting because it pays 11:1, but its RTP is much lower than the standard bet. I therefore prefer the main duel with the dealer. The layout is easy to read, and the mobile version works well because there is very little clutter on screen.

Editor’s reply:

The difference is significant: Habanero lists a 97.3% RTP for the Standard Bet and 88.75% for the Tie Bet, so bets that may look similar have very different mathematics.

The mechanic is easy to understand, but the decision on a tie is not as simple as it first seems. If you choose Go to War, the amount at risk effectively doubles because you must add another bet of the same size. That makes the game more interesting to me, but it also means I have to watch my stake more carefully.

Editor’s reply:

That is an important detail. Comparing the cards is simple, but Go to War changes the overall risk of the round because the additional bet is mandatory.

War works when I want a fast card game, but I miss having larger potential multipliers. The x11 maximum looks modest compared with slots offering thousands of times the stake. On the other hand, it is immediately clear why a round won or lost, and there is no long symbol table to learn.

Editor’s reply:

War is not designed around huge multipliers but around a short, transparent dealing cycle. The x11 maximum caps the upside of one result, while keeping the rules easy to verify.

War Review Summary

War suits players who prefer fast card games without complicated hand tables. The standard bet has an official RTP of 97.3%, and the central feature is the choice between Surrender and Go to War after a tie. Players looking for huge multipliers or long bonus modes may find the format too simple. Before playing for real money, it makes sense to open the demo and check how the additional stake works.
